The Unseen Artistry Of Women

Published in the Washington Post’s The Lily on August 28th 2022.

I was floored by the warm reception of this piece. It reached over 140k likes on The Washington Post’s and The Lily’s social media and received numerous beautiful personal stories from readers which prompted a follow up article. I’m so delighted we’ve started something of a revolution in celebrating the work of our foremothers. Here is the follow up piece I wrote and illustrated with the help of my editors María Alconada Brooks and Janay Kingsberry, including testimonies and beautiful pieces of domestic art from women near and far. The follow up was published September 16th 2022.

The piece was selected as Top 10 comic stories of 2022 in The Washington Post’s The Lily, and was selected for The Washington Post’s first comic anthology, Drawn In, which was published in 2023.

Thank you editors Hannah Good, María Alconada Brooks and Janay Kingsberry.

It’s time to appreciate domestic artistry
like sewing and baking.

This summer I had coffee with my grandmother. The woman who sat before me was a skilled artist. Yet, in her 83 years, she had never recognized her own talent. I began to wonder: How much talent has gone uncelebrated because we feel entitled to women’s work?

I loved highlighting and honouring beautiful pieces by my many foremothers for the visuals of this story, and hope we learn to celebrate domestic art for the treasure it is.
