Sólveig Eva Magnúsdóttir

I am an award-winning Icelandic American author-illustrator and actress, published in the Washington Post, the New Yorker, LA Times, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, the Boston Globe and beyond.

I love exploring intimate relationships and the multiplicity of identity and belonging. I hope to write stories that — due to their whimsical framing — may bypass our guard and comfort our inner child, as well as entertain. I love stories that allow us to hold space and relate to our repressed emotions, neglected parts of ourselves, our wants and needs.

I am currently working on two graphic novels: “Pretty Privilege: My time as a model-caterer to the rich and famous, working alongside the almost rich and famous” explores the growing wealth gap in America, the entertainment industry, and the resulting objectification of women when status tends to come from power over others. The story is told through Lóa, an immigrant actress in New York city. “Space Mama Piggy” is a whimsical tragicomedy about motherhood, failures and belonging, told through the misadventures of a space pig.

I hold a masters degree in theatre from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. I studied creative writing at Stanford, UCB and UCLAx, as well as illustration, printmaking and design at Reykjavík School of Arts, SVA and RISD. I studied performing arts at Rose Bruford (BA), LAMDA, Stella Adler, Knickerbocker, Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, and beyond. I have taught autobiographical physical theatre storytelling at leading European drama schools and institutions with my multi-award winning theatre company Spindrift. In addition to working as an author-illustrator I am an actress, appearing on Netflix, Showtime, HBO and TruTV. I also freelance as a character- and storyboard artist for animated series, and as a muralist.

I am represented by Cole Lanahan at The Seymour Agency.
