Pretty Privilege
A 300 page graphic novel, currently in the publishing process with my agent Cole Lanahan at the Seymour Agency.
“Before Sólveig Eva Magnúsdóttir became an award-winning comic artist published in the New Yorker, the Washington Post, LA Times, the Boston Globe and McSweeney’s, she worked as an actress and model-caterer in New York. “Pretty Privilege: My time as a model-caterer to the rich and famous, working alongside the almost rich and famous” is based on real events, encounters and conversations that took place during this time. ”
We follow Lóa, an immigrant actress in New York, in the aftermath of Covid, during the full shut down of her industry, while navigating a tumultuous breakup from her long term partner. Struggling to stay afloat in one of the most expensive cities in the world, Lóa begins staffing the luxurious private parties of billionaires. There, she becomes increasingly aware of the growing wealth inequality in America, the hypersexualization of women in her industry, and the ever present threat of violence when power and status thrive on the commodification of women and minorities. Increasingly, this brutal reality permeates all aspects of her life.
Set against the backdrop of New York, this humorous, tender and vulnerable graphic novel explores the gray areas of violence, while highlighting the healing power of friendships.
